NCR paper meaning (quick answer)

NCR paper (also called carbonless paper) is used for forms that need duplicate or triplicate copies, such as delivery notes, job sheets, and work orders. The sheets are coated so the writing transfers through to the copies underneath when you write on the top sheet.

Most businesses use 2-part or 3-part NCR.

How NCR paper works

NCR paper uses coated sheets that react under pressure when you write. Instead of inserting a carbon sheet between pages, the coatings on the NCR paper create the copy automatically.

You will sometimes see the sheets described as:

  • Top sheet (CB) – the sheet you write on

  • Middle sheet (CFB) – used in 3-part and above, receives and passes the copy

  • Bottom sheet (CF) – the final copy sheet

In simple terms, the top sheet produces the image, and the sheets underneath receive it.

2-part vs 3-part NCR – what does it mean?

“Parts” just means the number of sheets (and copies) in each form.

  • 2-part NCR – 2 sheets, 1 copy

  • 3-part NCR – 3 sheets, 2 copies

A quick rule is to choose based on who needs a copy. If it is “one for them, one for us”, 2-part is usually right. If you need “customer, office, driver/site”, 3-part is usually the better fit.

NCR Pads vs NCR Books vs NCR Sets

The format matters because it changes how the paperwork is used day-to-day.

NCR Pads
Top-glued tear-off pads for day-to-day paperwork, especially when your team is writing on site and handing copies over.

NCR Books
Bound NCR books for tidy record keeping and traceability, especially when you need sequential paperwork kept together.

NCR Sets
Loose collated NCR sets, ideal when you need one complete set per job for deliveries, job packs, or work orders.

Common NCR form uses

NCR forms are commonly used for:

  • Delivery notes

  • Job sheets

  • Work orders

  • Site sign-off forms

  • Vehicle check sheets

FAQs

Is NCR paper the same as carbon paper?
No. NCR is carbonless, so you do not need a carbon sheet between pages.

What does 2-part or 3-part mean?
It is the number of sheets in each form. 2-part gives one copy, 3-part gives two copies.

Which is better – pads, books, or sets?
Pads are best for tear-off use on site, books are best for tidy record keeping and traceability, and sets are best when you need loose collated sets per job.

Can you match an existing pad?
Yes. If you have artwork, send it. If you only have a scan or photo, we can recreate it accurately.

Do you offer numbering?
Yes, numbering is available as part of the specification when you price your NCR forms.
